What did professional sharpshooter Frank Butler do after Annie Oakley outshot him? He married her and, as her performing career developed, supported a talent that would eclipse his own.

That relationship is one thread in "The true story of Annie Oakley | Full Documentary | American Experience PBS," a newly uploaded film narrated by Laura Linney. The documentary drew roughly 26,000 views in six hours, an unusually fast start for the channel's long videos. It is a return to the archive, not a new production: the film dates to 2006.

Long before the international tours, Oakley taught herself to shoot with her father's rifle and sold wild game to help pay off the family farm's mortgage. Later, she initially worked backstage on Butler's variety tours before becoming the attraction herself. Historian Virginia Scharff describes Butler as recognizing his wife's star quality rather than trying to overshadow it.

The film also looks closely at how Oakley presented herself. Her modest Victorian-style shooting costumes helped protect her reputation while she performed feats audiences associated with men. Flying glass targets, rapid shooting and a place in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show eventually carried her to London and an encounter with Queen Victoria.

Producer Riva Freifeld explicitly distinguishes this life from the fictionalized romance of Annie Get Your Gun. That distinction has an echo in the comments: viewers describe knowing Oakley's name without knowing her history, while others remember encountering her through childhood biographies or a television showing in Chicago.

What viewers say

Phenomenal documentary. She has always been a household name in the American folkish vernacular, but I had never known her story. Very interesting.

I was able to read a biography of Annie Oakley way back in my childhood. What a tale she carried, and a woman she is decades later.💪
