Karl Bushby pushes his wheeled cart through a welcoming crowd in Hull, then reaches the doorstep that makes this homecoming personal. His mother is waiting outside.
"Where have I been?" he asks as they embrace. "I'm old now," she replies.
Josh Bavas's report for 9 News Australia traces the journey back to Punta Arenas, Chile, where Bushby set off in 1998. Its animated map follows him north through the Americas, across the Bering Strait and onward through Russia, Asia and Europe to Britain.
This was not simply a matter of putting one foot in front of the other. Archive footage shows jungle terrain and icy waters. Bushby describes political obstacles in Russia, while the report recounts swimming stages across the Caspian Sea and the English Channel.
At home, his reflections turn from the route to the people waiting for him. "The people who pay the price on this one are some of the closest people to you, you know, family, lovers," he says.
The report drew about 89,000 views since yesterday, the largest audience among Nine's new uploads over that period. Bavas says Bushby is working on a documentary about the walk and considering another, smaller journey.
An English adventurer and author known for walking expeditions. He is also a former paratrooper.
