Chris Pappas and Abdul El-Sayed are heading to the same chamber with different places in its history: its first openly gay male senator and its first Muslim senator, respectively, according to Germany's ZDFheute Nachrichten, the news service of public broadcaster ZDF.

The brief report places their victories within Democrats' recapture of both houses of Congress, then looks beyond the balance of power to who will hold office.

Pappas wins in New Hampshire after serving in the House of Representatives since 2019. El-Sayed, an epidemiologist, wins in Michigan. The report also highlights a Democratic Senate breakthrough in Kansas, describing it as the party's first Senate election victory there since 1932.

The other milestones concern governors, not congressional seats. ZDF reports that Keisha Lance Bottoms's Georgia victory makes her the first Black woman elected governor of any US state. In Texas, Gina Hinojosa becomes the state's first Latina governor-elect.

That distinction matters: Democrats' congressional victories change the checks on President Donald Trump in Washington, while Bottoms and Hinojosa will lead state governments.
