- 11:14Kaipo interviews Medina on a rescue sled before the broadcast follows him back to the beach.
"Yeah, that means a lot. I've been trying so hard all year long," Gabriel Medina says from a rescue sled after winning the Philippines Pro. The interview catches the relief; the replay shows the ride that helped put him there.
At Cloud 9 in Siargao, Medina pulls deep inside a wave and keeps running through successive barrel sections. For a moment, the Brazilian is surrounded by water, with more wave still unfolding ahead. He emerges with a 9.43, the highest-scoring ride of the final.
Jack Robinson makes sure it isn't a procession. The Australian responds with a critical tube ride and a forceful turn, keeping the contest alive after Medina's big score. But the clock runs out before he can complete the comeback, leaving the three-time world champion with the inaugural Philippines Pro title.
The World Surf League's replay drew around 190,000 views in less than a day, far beyond its usual opening audience for regular videos. Both semifinal uploads also made unusually strong starts: Medina's meeting with Yago Dora and Robinson's heat against Ethan Ewing. A separate Short from the final picked up quickly, too.
The broadcast stays with Medina after the result. He speaks Portuguese to his family and Brazilian supporters, then returns to shore, embraces his coach Charlie and shakes hands with Robinson. By the time he heads toward the Cloud 9 viewing tower, spectators are chanting his name and carrying him on their shoulders, Brazilian flag in hand.
