Filipe Toledo launches a huge alley-oop and lands far out on the flat water. Ethan Ewing finds his answer inside a thick, hollow wave, disappearing into a deep barrel before emerging cleanly. Their Cloud 9 quarterfinal offers two very different ways to impress the judges.
The World Surf League highlights have passed 100,000 views in 19 hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full first day for a regular video. The comment section is even more of a departure: it has attracted dozens of times the usual first-day discussion.
Much of that conversation centers on what a wave should be worth. Viewers compare Toledo's single, high-flying maneuver with Ewing's combination of tube riding and turns. Several argue that linking maneuvers should carry more weight than one spectacular aerial; others pick apart the height, projection and landing of Toledo's jump.
The footage gives that discussion something concrete to work with. Toledo's successful aerial follows an earlier attempt that ends in a wipeout. Ewing opens with a clean barrel and an open-face turn, then later threads the deeper tube that helps secure his win. Toledo earns the higher individual wave score, but Ewing finishes with the stronger combined total.
The Philippines coverage is drawing attention beyond this heat. Quarterfinal uploads featuring Yago Dora against Kanoa Igarashi and Gabriel Medina against George Pittar also have unusually large early audiences. Of those regular highlights, though, it is Toledo and Ewing's contrasting approaches at Cloud 9 that have drawn the most views.

Great heat. Let’s hope WSL keeps coming back to Cloud 9. Reminder of Keramas a few years back.

That 9.17 should have been higher than the air Felipe did. It was thick and he was so deep! Great surfing by both. Ethan got him on wave selection.
@spencermcallon22See it on YouTubeEthan’s barrel was so thick and deep, a proper good tube ride. He then pulled a full throttled smooth full roundhouse cutback than only a few of the top pros are capable of. Then a small air rev. Epic wave 10!
