The Soy Pill takes on 'your algorithm,' and finds a crowd doing it
A commentary posted September 30 has left the channel's usual run of political uploads far behind, each of those still under 20,000 views.
Why this story? The whole channel is running at 452,799 views a day, 14 times a normal day (32,717).
"The REAL Reason Your Algorithm SUCKS" went up on The Soy Pill on September 30. Three days later it had passed 400,000 views. The title promises to explain why the recommendation feed keeps serving people what it serves them, a subject almost everyone with a phone has an opinion about.
That makes it an outlier on this channel. The uploads around it are the creator's usual ground, politics with a sharp title: ICE wanting to "run like Amazon," a video built on the line "You know it's bad when even Fox News is going against Trump," another called "As long as the boot is American!" and a Soy News segment on Abdul El-Sayed's interview with Ezra Klein. None of them has reached 20,000 views. Across the whole channel, daily views ran at more than ten times their usual pace.
The Soy Pill sums itself up in two words in the channel's about section, "Resident soyboy," and keeps a weekly live show, Lib n' Learn Live, on Mondays at 4 p.m. Pacific, with the stream recordings parked on a separate channel.
It is a lively stretch for political commentary channels of this size in general. Jasmin Laine, Scott MacFarlane Reports and Large Man Abroad are all running ahead of their usual pace, while Reasoned is quieter. None of them comes close to this kind of jump, though.
There is a neat irony in which video broke out. Perhaps a complaint about recommendation feeds is exactly the kind of thing those feeds like to pass along?

The word "algorithm" comes from the name of which Persian mathematician?
Latin translations of the ninth-century scholar Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi's work rendered his name as "Algoritmi," which gave us the word algorithm.
