  1. 0:46Alex praises the Rogue One Darth Vader comic's art but questions how much new character depth it offers.
  2. 6:37The hosts consider Vader fatigue and the storytelling opportunities that remain.
  3. 7:05Alex wants an ongoing Obi-Wan and Anakin comic set between Episodes I and II.
  4. 15:43Their Hyperdice adventure uses the Jenga-based Dread system for a journey into Vader's castle.
  5. 20:00Mollie tests Alex with questions from the trivia book So You Think You Know Star Wars.

Alex likes Darth Vader best in Rogue One when the film uses him sparingly. Mollie agrees: that restraint makes his arrival at the end scarier. It is a useful starting point for Star Wars Explained's most-watched new upload, which asks how much more storytelling the armored Sith Lord needs.

In "Have We Had Enough Darth Vader Stories - Last Week In Star Wars," the hosts review the Rogue One anniversary one-shot comic, admiring its art while questioning how much it adds to the character. Their discussion isn't a blanket rejection of Vader. Alex singles out Charles Soule's comics and their exploration of his castle, while wishing for an ongoing series about Obi-Wan and Anakin between Episodes I and II.

Viewers pick up that distinction. Several want more Padawan Anakin adventures or stories about less familiar characters; another is comfortable with Vader as an antagonist but sees fewer possibilities with him at the center. The episode also introduces the hosts' Hyperdice tabletop adventure, "Dread of Vader's Castle," where Jenga supplies the tension instead of dice.

The commentary-and-clips channel posted nine uploads. "Everything Awesome About Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu" nearly matched the Vader discussion's total audience and is now its busiest video by daily views. Its description promises a personal look at the movie's funny and heartfelt moments, rather than an argument that it was flawless.

Subscribers were unchanged, and daily viewing is below half its usual level. Nearby movie-commentary channels CinePals and Let Me Explain had substantially larger weekly audiences. Here, the smaller corners of the galaxy remain active too: Finis Valorum's quick biography and an explanation of Omi, the sentient dianoga in the Death Star trash compactor, are among the uploads drawing the most daily views.

What viewers say

  • I think we need more Padawan Anakin stories.

  • I'm happy with more stories set between RotS and ANH, and Vader appearing there as an antagonist is fine, but him as a protagonist?

I think there's definitely a limit on the amount of stories left. Even as is, they've retread a lot of story elements

  • I do agree we need to stop having Vader in everything

  • Star Wars in general has an issue with making the universe seem small. It’s a gigantic universe with infinite story telling potential, yet we are constantly chained to the same 10-15 characters

  • I've always wanted to do a one shot D&D session for a Vader's Castle run - my idea was the new Republic has to go through it immediately after Return of the Jedi, great minds think alike, and of course we have Cavan Scott to thank.

  • A set of Anakin/Obi Wan stories like there was before TCW would be so cool! I imagine people would love it. They're such a good duo for short adventure stories and have gone so unappreciated by the publishers in recent times

  • Vader losing is kinda like Hoth: sure the empire kills a lot of rebels, took out the shield, invaded the base but never secured Skywalker or the commanding rebels at their base.

  • Thanks to Alex and Mollie and Pippin! 🧙‍♀
