Hoover tries an earnest defense of Delta House's traditions. Dean Wormer cuts him off. Then Tim Matheson's Otter steps forward with a much less straightforward approach to the charges against his fraternity.
The scene from National Lampoon's Animal House has gathered about 61,000 views in a day on Comedy Bites Vintage, roughly ten times its usual daily pace. Posted four days ago, the excerpt pairs the student disciplinary hearing with its unhappy aftermath back at the house.
Otter's maneuver is to make the hearing about almost anything except Delta's conduct. A procedural objection becomes a defense of American institutions, until he is protesting, "And listen to you bad-mouth the United States of America!" The distance between the fraternity's actual predicament and the grandeur of his argument is the joke.
Matheson's smooth delivery gets a stern counterweight in John Vernon as Wormer, while John Belushi's Bluto joins the Delta contingent. This is a scene from John Landis's 1978 film, reposted by a clips channel, rather than a new performance.
The comments include viewers recalling how they borrowed Otter's speech when they got into trouble, recognizing Vernon, and trading remembered lines. Another Animal House excerpt on the channel is also moving well beyond its usual daily audience: Otter inviting Wormer's wife Marion, played by Verna Bloom, to the toga party. Between the two scenes, Matheson's unflappable troublemaker is getting plenty of room to work.
