A typing game from the DOS days, and a PDF trick for Excel, on Matty McTech

Four uploads ran from a wave-by-wave typing test to a tier list of the internet's oddest websites, while a twelve-day-old Google video kept drawing the biggest crowd.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Matty McTech's channel usually takes in a little under 400,000 views a day. Lately it has been running above that, around half a million, and the video doing most of the lifting is not one of the new ones.

That would be "Google secrets they don't want you to know," twelve days old and still gathering more views per day than anything else on the channel. Its three tricks are practical ones: flying around the world, seeing which mailing lists you are signed up to, and downloading everything Google holds about you.

Of the four new uploads, "You won't beat this" drew the most views. It is a typing game where you clear waves of words as fast as your fingers allow, and the comments turned into a memory lane. Several viewers recognized it from the early 2000s or even old DOS typing tutors, one recalled spending sales-floor downtime on it, and a sitcom fan spotted Fran from Black Books in the opening. Others swapped warnings about pop-up ads interrupting the later stages.

The newest video is pure office craft: how to bring a PDF table into Excel without copy and paste. Ten hours in, it was already moving faster than anything else he posted all week. Between them sits "I Tested Every Weird Website," a tier list running from Pointer Pointer and Hacker Typer to Eel Slap and the McDonald's ice cream machine tracker McBroken, an idea he credits to a fellow creator named Derk.

Subscribers grew by about 10,000. Among similar-sized tech channels, Insert Richie and Switch and Click are having busy weeks, while Techmoan and Brandon Butch are running quieter than usual. Matty sits comfortably in the middle, with an older Google video still pulling the hardest.

What viewers say

  • Used to work in sales and spent pretty much all my downtime playing this game. I wasn’t the best salesman on staff, but I was most definitely the fastest typist.

  • Holy shit. That game has been around since, i think it was called, TypingTutor back in the early 90s or earlier. Really old DOS game. Jeez. I can remember that but not my password from 5 minutes ago.

  • Fran from Black books at the start, that was a good episode. Shit, they're all good episodes.
