After ten years of zeros, AirPods 5 finally score on iFixit's scale

A hair dryer and a clamp opened the earbud to reveal a removable battery, though the charging case still put up a fight.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Ten years, then a crack. For a decade iFixit has handed every pair of AirPods a 0 out of 10 for repairability, and the one video of the week is about why that streak ended with the AirPods 5.

The teardown found something the team had not seen in years: a battery that comes out without wrecking the earbud. Getting in took little more than a hair dryer and a clamp, which became a small running joke in the comments. Then came the charging case, and the description admits the celebration stopped there. The final verdict is not a repairable product, just the highest score AirPods have ever earned from iFixit. Along the way the video looks at Apple's H2 chip and the capacitive touch controls, and the top comment politely points out that touch control lives only on one version of the case. Another popular one notes that Apple can now technically call these its most repairable AirPods. Several viewers also brought up the Fairphone earbuds' swappable case battery, which the video shows by way of contrast.

The video passed 690,000 views in four days and carried the channel to roughly twice its usual daily pace. Behind it, the Steam Frame teardown, where Valve's headset earns praise for a quick-release strap and swappable lens stacks, keeps drawing a steady crowd, with the iPhone 18 Pro and its tiny mechanical aperture blades further back.

Among tech channels of similar size, Parker Burton is having the loudest week by far, and Snazzy Labs and MrMobile are also running well above their usual level. iFixit sits comfortably in the middle of that group, on the strength of a single pair of earbuds.
