Things we can learn from the video
Press to jump
- 0:21The Ferryman sacrificed himself to ferry dead souls back to the living world.
- 1:50Cursed chests express the amplified sorrow and rage of souls trapped inside.
- 2:40Mermaid statues act as cocoons in which captured pirates transform into Ocean Crawlers.
- 3:30The Eternal Guard were ancient warriors tricked into having their souls bound into stone armour.
- 4:37Stolen dark relics helped corrupt the island that became the Fort of the Damned.
- 6:00Madame Oletta's pursuit of forbidden knowledge supplies the backstory to the Fate's Light Lantern.
Why do those treasure chests cry? Sea of Thieves has an answer rather darker than damaged loot: their wails are the emotions of souls trapped inside them.
That is one of the revelations in "Seven Spooky Things in the Sea of Thieves...", the official channel's most-watched new upload of the week, with roughly 22,000 views. Made for the Festival of the Damned, the countdown moves from the Ferryman's sacrifice to mermaid statues that serve as cocoons, transforming captured pirates into Ocean Crawlers. The green-and-purple-lit presenter gives familiar objects a distinctly less comfortable backstory.
Viewers have supplied their own alternatives to the list. Several point to sounds rather than monsters: an Ancient Skeleton spawning, or a mermaid appearing near a ship when another crew might be lurking. Others nominate the sight of a larger vessel approaching their little sloop. Lore is unsettling; another pirate with designs on your cargo is rather more immediate.
The week's other upload, "#BeMorePirates | Official Sea of Thieves Outfit Saving Trailer", showcases saved clothing combinations. These are Rare's own game-promotional videos, though the wardrobe feature also provides a lighter counterpoint to all those imprisoned souls. An earlier outfit-saving clip remains the channel's busiest upload by daily views, alongside the spooky countdown and October update trailer.
Subscribers held steady, while daily viewing is currently below half its usual level. The week's total viewing was close to Bungie's; XBOX ON had a substantially busier week. Here, the conversation has room for both sinister secrets and the practical pleasure of remembering a favourite outfit.

That thing's always so loud it's like a jump scare 😭😭@ExhibtedTuba46See it on YouTubeNothing is as scary as seeing a Brig or gally in the distance heading your way when you are on a sloop, just trying to finish some commendations.

I loved this bit of lore and progression :)
@PrincessofErisedSee it on YouTubeScariest thing to me? The sound of a mermaid popping up near your ship as you finish stacking the fort of the damned, thats when you know you got jumped.
Oh and seeing a golden ghost/skelly pirate or affiliate alliance crew on the opposite side of you whether in hourglass or out on the open seas. Thats scared me a few times too@Johnora0696See it on YouTubeYou should've done one on the Sword of Souls, as that's what Pendragon used to free souls from their cursed skulls, and what also allowed Captain Flameheart to be released from his prison, and what LeChuck temporarily reforged under the name of Flameheart's flagship, the Burning Blade.
@TheDarkSparkVaultSee it on YouTubeWe need an upgrade to the Chest of Rage. Something far more sinister: the Chest of Fury.
An unending flurry of flames with an insatiable thirst to burn everything in its wake. Notoriously difficult to handle, even more treacherous to carry, and nearly impossible to turn in without a few trips to the Ferry of the Damned.@bumfizzler9872See it on YouTubeREQUESTING BAGPIPES AS AN INSTRUMENT!
