RAF Fairford police update draws level with Esther Rantzen on the Daily Record
A counterterrorism chief's short statement about three vans and a quantity of petrol drew about twenty times a usual first day, while the paper's own Scotland football inquest stayed in the hundreds.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 45,647 views a day, 22 times a normal first day on this channel (2,030).
'No improvised explosive devices found' near RAF Fairford, say police
Two videos posted on the same day are now carrying the Daily Record's channel, and they could hardly be more different. One is the paper's report on the death of Dame Esther Rantzen, as we reported here. The other, which has caught up with it in less than a day, is a police update from an investigation in Gloucestershire, a long way from the paper's home in Scotland.
"'No improvised explosive devices found' near RAF Fairford, say police" passed 42,000 views in its first 20 hours. That is roughly twenty times what a new upload on the channel usually gathers in a full first day. The video is built around a statement from Assistant Commissioner Laurence Taylor, head of Counter Terrorism Policing. He said that no improvised explosive devices were found in the three vans discovered near the base at the weekend, but that a quantity of petrol was recovered.
The statement has not settled the conversation underneath it. The comments, more than 400 of them, are full of questions about why the case was handled by counterterrorism officers if no explosive devices were found.
The Record's own Scottish material from the same day moved at its usual pace. Two Hotline Live episodes on Scotland's 3-0 home defeat to Switzerland, Sebastien Pocognoli's first game in charge at Hampden, have a few hundred views each. A Planet Holyrood panel on Andy Burnham and the pensions triple lock is in the same range. Between them, the Fairford update and the Rantzen report have pushed the whole channel to about twice its normal daily views.
