Chris Boden's Project Aftercare gets its diesel engine aboard

A forklift, custom extensions and a chain hoist help volunteers reach a milestone in the long-running boat overhaul.

Mark brings the forklift, the crew guides the rigging, and Project Aftercare finally has an engine lowered into its bay. Chris Boden's boat overhaul has reached a tangible milestone, six years after the boat was stripped.

The diesel isn't even the main attraction mechanically. Boden explains that the Westerbeke will provide backup propulsion, with an electric main drive planned for the boat. Its heavy displacement hull doesn't need an enormous engine: this is a project for an unhurried trip on the water, not a speedboat demonstration.

The boat update was the most-watched of Boden's four uploads this week, reaching roughly 293,000 views. Beneath it, viewers trade project-boat jokes, translate watts into horsepower and recall their own restoration work. One remembers restoring a wooden boat with their dad and getting years of use from it. Boden's closing interest in fireboat water cannons also gets attention, an unusually ambitious accessory for a leisurely cruise.

Elsewhere, the week's workshop subjects included the Sensus AR5501, Archimedes and a tuning-fork limit switch. The Sensus upload is attracting the most daily views among the channel's active videos, while October's ignitron-tube lesson remains a substantial draw alongside the new switch video.

Boden added 10,000 subscribers over the week. Daily viewing is above its usual level, and his weekly views sit among the stronger totals in this neighboring science-channel group, alongside busy stretches for BBC Earth Science and Beyond the Observable Universe.

For Project Aftercare, though, the useful progress is physical: a volunteer crew has put the backup engine where it belongs.
