Mercury-powered electronics get Chris Boden's workshop-comedy treatment
An ignitron tube joins a boat lift, a sanding table and a Peltier box in his four-upload week.

Chris Boden found his biggest new audience in an older kind of electronics: the ignitron, a mercury-based tube used to control large electrical currents. His October 13 upload has reached roughly 877,000 views, comfortably the largest audience for his four new videos.
An ignitron is a controlled rectifier, converting alternating current into current flowing in one direction. That puts it squarely in Boden's territory: industrial equipment with a physics lesson attached, delivered through comedy rather than a solemn technical manual. Viewers picked up on the combination of mercury and high voltage, while others brought up the history of mercury rectifiers on electric railways. One even heard a potential album name in the description of water-cooled quicksilver.
The rest of the new batch stayed hands-on, covering a boat lift, a sanding table and a Peltier box. The ignitron upload also has the strongest daily momentum across the channel, with the sanding-table and Peltier-box videos next among its currently busiest uploads.
Boden added 10,000 subscribers over seven days, although daily views are running a little below their usual level. Among nearby science channels, Beyond the Observable Universe had a particularly substantial viewing week; Boden's weekly view gain was also larger than those of BBC Earth Science, Scott Manley and Animagraffs. For his own viewers, the week's conversation returned to a familiar invitation: several mentioned instinctively answering when he asks whether they want to see something cool.
