Parbati, Gauri and a Dalit Commission note: Juthe's Episode 269 takes off

The Wednesday episode of the Himalaya Television drama came close to half a million views in fourteen hours, though OSR Digital's new Aa Bata Aama 2 song is still well ahead of it.

Wednesday belonged to Juthe. Episode 269 of the serial's second season went up on OSR Digital on September 30, half an hour after its 8 p.m. broadcast on Himalaya Television. Fourteen hours later it was close to half a million views, about ten times what a new upload on the channel usually gathers in a full first day.

Juthe is not a light watch. Its description calls it a social serial about the Dalit emancipation movement against oppression, the heroes of that movement and a vision of what liberation could look like. Marichman Shrestha and Rabi Giri lead the title credits, and the cast includes Bidhya Karki, Rambabu Regmi, Mukunda Mainali and Sarmila Sharma. A note in Nepali under the episode adds something unusual for a TV drama. After a range of reactions on social media, the team says it decided to continue in consultation with Nepal's National Dalit Commission, and it thanks the commission for that.

The comment section reads like a writers' room run by the audience. Parbati's performance is singled out, and several viewers say the final part brought them to tears. Others want Gauri back soon, ask for Juthe and Junkiri's married life to return to the story, or ask for less of Jimmal and Shridhar throwing their weight around. One popular joke suggests renaming the show after the gesture its characters keep making lately, a hand pressed to the head. Plenty of viewers check in from abroad.

It is not the channel's biggest new video. "Achel Kina Kanchhi," the Aa Bata Aama 2 song posted a day earlier, is far ahead. But one roll call in the comments lists Juthe beside Buhari, Kanchhi and Sita as serials not to be missed. Buhari had its own turn ahead of OSR Digital's movie teasers, as we reported here, and this week the Wednesday drama has followed it.
