Video taking off 70x its usual first day

Nearly half a million in thirteen hours for Sense and Sensibility's second trailer

Under the new Jane Austen trailer, viewers keep asking about its version of 'Man I Need' and holding it up against Ang Lee's 1995 film.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 634,284 views a day, 70 times a normal first day on this channel (8,997).

Two days after Andrew Scott's Elsinore trailer ran far ahead of anything Focus Features usually sees on day one, as we reported here, Jane Austen has given the channel another trailer like that. The second official trailer for Sense and Sensibility had almost half a million views thirteen hours after it went up, putting its first day at around seventy times a usual new upload on the channel.

The film comes from Focus Features and Working Title, the pairing behind the 2005 Pride & Prejudice and the 2020 Emma, and the video's tags nod to both. Georgia Oakley, who made Blue Jean, is named in the tags alongside the novelist Diana Reid. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles lead as the Dashwood sisters, with Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay, Frank Dillane and Fiona Shaw around them. The description bills it as a witty, relatable take on love and sisterhood, opening only in theaters on October 16.

The film's other recent videos, a behind-the-scenes featurette and a clip titled "Best Not to Provoke Her," are still in the tens of thousands. Elsinore has not gone quiet either: its trailer is closing in on seven million.

The comments read like a book club. The most liked one notices that these trailers seem to put Elinor and Edward at the center, where earlier versions leaned on Marianne, Willoughby and Colonel Brandon. Many viewers ask whether the trailer's version of "Man I Need," the Olivia Dean song, will be released. Others stay loyal to Ang Lee's 1995 film, written by Emma Thompson and starring Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant, or to the 2008 BBC series with Hattie Morahan and Dan Stevens, and a few find the new look too modern for its century. A few have already moved on to their wish lists, with Mansfield Park near the top.
