A five-ton lid gives National Geographic an archaeological puzzle

Kingdom of the Mummies visits a sealed sarcophagus beneath Saqqara, while Robert Ballard's Amelia Earhart search draws the channel's busiest viewing.

Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.

Getting into a sarcophagus is an engineering problem before it becomes an archaeological one. National Geographic's most watched new upload follows the team at Saqqara as they attempt to remove a massive limestone lid inside a subterranean tomb shaft.

"Unearthing A Mysterious Sarcophagus (Full Episode) | Kingdom of the Mummies | National Geographic" has reached about 612,000 views. The episode, "The Lone Coffin," moves from mapping the tomb complex to opening the lid, digitally preserving the coffin and examining the mummy. Viewers are discussing the practical difficulty of moving that much stone underground, and the painstaking work involved in building an archaeological record. Others bring memories of visiting Egypt or growing up with the magazine's photographs.

National Geographic posted eight uploads across the week. Its Genghis Khan episode follows the expansion into Western Xia and northern China's Jin territory, while a long Drain the Oceans collection turns to treasure wrecks and Caribbean pirate ships.

The strongest momentum, though, belongs to an upload just outside this week's window. "Searching for Amelia Earhart (Full Episode) | SPECIAL | National Geographic" has passed two million views. Narrated by Allison Janney, it follows Titanic discoverer Robert Ballard's investigation around Nikumaroro, and is drawing substantially more daily viewing than any of the week's new arrivals.

The channel's subscriber count was unchanged. Daily viewing is well below its usual level, despite the largest weekly views total among these documentary and journalism peers. BBC Earth and WIRED are also running below their usual daily pace, while FRONTLINE PBS is having a stronger spell.

There is a new expedition on the shelf, too: the trailer for Expedition: Saving Our Seas introduces an ocean-science special narrated by Auliʻi Cravalho. The production is a paid partnership with Rolex, with a November 13 premiere announced.

What viewers say

  • Lifting a 5-ton solid limestone lid inside a tight subterranean shaft with modern winches is nerve-wracking enough—now imagine the ancient builders lowering it down there thousands of years ago with just ropes, wood, and pure human calculation. The engineering mastery at Saqqara never ceases to amaze.

  • The amount of effort that archaeologists devote to extracting information and building archaeological records is truly extraordinary.

There is so much to be discovered and learned in and from their archaeological records.
