Video taking off 30x its usual first day

Miwu Science catches a starfish eating with its stomach outside

An obstructed camera leads to a see-through setup, a long wait and a close-up of an unusual way to eat a clam.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 370,116 views a day, 30 times a normal first day on this channel (12,153).

The clams were gone, their empty shells remained, and Miwu Science's camera had missed the important part. The starfish's own body was blocking the view of its meal.

That small filming problem becomes the heart of a Short investigating whether starfish really push their stomachs outside their bodies to eat. It has drawn more than 320,000 views before its first day was over, running far ahead of the channel's usual Shorts start.

The hosts begin with Patrick Star from SpongeBob SquarePants and a disagreement about whether a cartoon could possibly have the biology right. They bring live starfish into an aquarium, add clams and set a camera rolling. Empty shells prove something happened, but don't show how.

So they change the setup: the tank goes onto a hollow stand, with transparent glass underneath and cameras positioned to catch the action from several angles. After a week of waiting, the view from below finally supplies the answer.

A starfish uses its tube feet to pull a clam's shell apart, then extends its stomach into the opening to digest the flesh. Dinner happens partly outside the diner.

The comments return to Patrick, with viewers reconsidering his relationship with clams and sponges. Others focus on the sight of a starfish opening a shell, and one asks for jellyfish next. For Miwu Science, the revealing shot comes not from getting closer, but from finding a way to look underneath.
