A broken staff is an obvious suspect. Men of the West's new Saruman essay takes a broader view: what happens when a wizard loses not just his equipment, but his confidence, influence and purpose?
The channel's only upload this week, "Why Was Saruman Slain So Easily? (How Did He Get So Weak?) - Middle-earth Explained", has reached roughly 58,000 views. Yoystan narrates over illustrations and film footage, returning to the book's ending in "The Scouring of the Shire" to examine how such a formidable figure became so vulnerable.
His starting point is that Tolkien's wizards inhabit bodies with real limitations. Saruman's voice, meanwhile, depends on more than volume: Yoystan argues that losing control and becoming flustered undermines his greatest weapon. The fortress, army and staff matter, but he does not treat the staff's destruction as a simple off switch. Later, he explores the more speculative question of spiritual willpower and the consequences of abandoning the mission given to Saruman.
Viewers are working through much the same puzzle. Several focus on whether the staff channels power or symbolizes authority; others point to Gandalf's judgment and contrast the two wizards' physical endurance. One finds a tabletop-roleplaying joke in Saruman's reliance on charisma.
The essay is comfortably the channel's busiest video right now. The earlier love-triangle discussion involving Sauron, Galadriel and Celeborn, and the Season 3 hopes-and-fears video, are drawing smaller audiences each day.
Subscribers held steady over the week, while today's viewing is well below the channel's usual daily level. Elsewhere in Tolkien territory, Nerd of the Rings had a larger weekly audience, while Tolkien Untangled was quieter. For Men of the West, the week's new conversation belongs to Saruman's voice, and what remains when it stops persuading people.

Just as rust destroys iron from within, a mind poisoned by pride, ambition, and bitterness is the true destroyer of oneself and can cause more harm than the greatest enemy. Pride and desires must be governed through the power of choice and wisdom. The inability to do that was truly Saruman's bane.
