The demolished arch is the visible break. The less visible one, analysts in this report argue, is an attempt to cut North Koreans off from the idea that the South offers a different future.

South Korea's Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation examines that connection in a PD Notebook report linking Kim Jong Un's rejection of reunification to tighter cultural controls. The excerpt revisits his December 2023 declaration that the Koreas had become hostile states, rather than parts of a nation working toward eventual unity.

Kim, who succeeded his father Kim Jong Il in 2011, is abandoning a policy associated with both his father and his grandfather, North Korea's founder Kim Il Sung. Researcher Cho Han-bum describes the reversal as symbolically digging up their legacy. That is the meaning of the grave imagery in the video's title, "김일성·김정일 파묘한 김정은, \"선대의 오판..치워버려라\" [뉴스.zip/MBC뉴스]": it does not report an actual exhumation.

The report pairs earlier footage of Pyongyang's with satellite images showing its removal. Researcher Hong Min interprets the destruction as a declaration that the predecessors' approach to exchanges and cooperation was a mistake that would not be repeated. Seoul National University scholar Lee Moon-young argues that Kim sees greater benefits for regime survival in separation, alongside closer ties with Russia.

The consequences extend beyond monuments. The report presents footage it identifies as public trials and punishment for consuming South Korean entertainment. Kang Min-guk, a former North Korean military noncommissioned officer who defected in 2024, says a fellow serviceman received life imprisonment for watching the drama The Legend of the Blue Sea.

Construction footage then shows barriers going up near the inter-Korean border. Former defector and researcher Ri Il-gyu argues that the two-state policy is intended to uproot admiration for South Korea among North Koreans and secure their loyalty to Kim. In his account, physical separation and cultural repression serve the same purpose.
