New police recruits answer with repeated shouts of no as Yogi Adityanath asks whether recommendations, money or intimidation helped them secure their jobs.
The exchange appears in a speech clip carried by India's Hindi-language news channel Republic Bharat. The broadcaster says the ceremony at Lucknow Police Lines marked the distribution of appointment letters to more than 4,500 newly selected sub-inspectors in Uttar Pradesh, the northern Indian state Adityanath leads.
At the podium, he first asks whether anyone needed a recommendation to obtain selection. He then asks about financial transactions or offers, followed by whether anyone used threats to obtain an appointment letter. Each question draws an audible negative response from the audience.
Adityanath presents the answers as evidence of transparent recruitment and thanks the Uttar Pradesh Police Recruitment and Promotion Board's chairman and staff for completing the selection process transparently and on time.
He also links the appointments to prosperity, describing their distribution on Dhanteras, ahead of Diwali, as symbolically significant.
