At a Tokyo arcade, restarting a Taiko no Tatsujin machine brings up an authentication screen, then an error. The cabinet is physically there, but the service it needs is unavailable. Nearby, notices explain why customers cannot play.
Japan's All-Nippon News Network channel, ANNnewsCH, operated by TV Asahi, follows the disruption from arcade floors to restaurant queues in its November 7 Good! Morning report. It describes separate unauthorized-access incidents affecting games, food ordering, customer information and reward points.
According to the report, an intrusion into some Sega Fave servers led to the suspension of online matches and other functions from November 1. Popular arcade machines, including Taiko no Tatsujin and Gundam titles, became unusable at affected locations.
At Game W in Tokyo's Toshima ward, operating-company executive Yoshikazu Suzuki demonstrates the failed restart. He estimates that customer numbers have fallen by 70 to 80 percent. Games that normally attract everyone from children to older visitors are standing idle, and the report says there was no timetable for restoration.
The disruption at Matsuya, a restaurant chain known for beef bowls, had a different consequence: lunchtime lines at ticket machines. The broadcaster reports that unauthorized access on October 28 forced the chain to suspend its official app, including mobile ordering, which normally lets customers order without queuing. The app was restored on the afternoon of November 6, after nine days.
The report also carries an apology from NTT Docomo president Yoshiaki Maeda over the reported leak of roughly 300,000 customer records. Some included workplace details and bank-account information. Separately, NTT Smile Energy said about eight million points held by customers in a rewards service had been improperly exchanged for digital gifts.
Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi links the succession of incidents to disruption of everyday life and business activity. Under an emergency package described in the report, a new public-private cyber rescue team will send specialists to companies hit by cyberattacks, helping contain the damage and restore services.
A Japanese toy and arcade company wholly owned by Sega Sammy Holdings. It was known as Sega Toys until 2024.
