What does the evidence establish so far? At the briefing carried by LiveNOW from FOX, NTSB board member Thomas Chapman reports signs that the Learjet broke apart before impact, but makes clear that investigators are not yet determining why it crashed.
The flight from Austin to the Bahamas ended near West Palm Beach, killing all nine people aboard. Chapman reads a communications log that moves from reports of ice accumulation and moderate turbulence to a request to climb, then an overspeed descent and a mayday call. Those reports form part of the investigation, not a settled explanation for the crash.
"We will not be determining the probable cause of the crash while we're here on scene..." Chapman says.
The practical work is difficult, too. Senior investigator Timothy Monville describes a roadway crater containing wreckage. Officials ask witnesses to provide photographs or video and urge the public not to move debris.
The upload passed half a million views within its opening hours, already well beyond the channel's usual full first day for regular videos. A separate short update on the crash also drew an unusually large early audience.
The broadcast continues beyond the aviation briefing to the consequences on the ground: shelter and resources for evacuated mobile-home residents, a county emergency declaration and a request for additional state funding. Commissioner Joel Flores then repeats recovery and evacuation information in Spanish for local residents.
The National Transportation Safety Board is an independent US federal agency that investigates civil transportation accidents, including aviation crashes.
