Trump says Canada would pay for Keystone under proposed deal
Global News's Iowa clip pairs the pipeline proposal with a promise to remove dairy tariffs, as Canada-U.S. trade talks continue.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 138,825 views a day, 10 times a normal first day on this channel (13,366).
Trump says Canada, US have "concepts of a deal"
Donald Trump pitches the potential agreement as good news for American farmers. But a reporter's question about Keystone draws the most concrete promise in Global News's short clip: Canada, he says, would build the pipeline and cover the cost.
"They're going to build the Keystone pipeline. They're going to pay for it. They're going to pay for all of it," Trump tells reporters in Dubuque, Iowa. He describes the United States as providing the route.
The remarks come after what Trump says were two conversations with Prime Minister Mark Carney. His opening description is more tentative than his pipeline promise: "We have the concept of a very good deal with Canada." Carney has also said talks are ongoing; the clip presents Trump's account of the proposed terms, not an announcement of a completed agreement.
Trump goes on to say American farmers have faced steep Canadian dairy tariffs and that an agreement would eliminate them. The comments under the upload focus partly on that assertion, with viewers debating how dairy tariffs and import quotas work. Others return to his use of the word "concepts."
The Short drew an estimated 140,000 views in its first day, far beyond Global News's usual start for the format. Comments arrived at roughly twelve times the usual first-day level.
Global News has since followed the remarks with Mackenzie Gray's report on Trump's further statement that the countries are "very close" to a deal, examining the renewed negotiations and their timing ahead of the U.S. midterms.
