Tashi and the Monk: Where it all started

Why would anyone want to watch their ordinary daily lives? That was the community leader's first reaction to Tashi and the Monk, as he recalls in Journeyman Pictures' only new upload this week.

In "Tashi and the Monk: Where it all started", his initial doubts give way to a rather different story. The documentary travelled to festivals, won a News & Documentary Emmy and, he explains, brought a wider network of supporters that helped the Himalayan community welcome more children. Its name, Jhamtse Gatsal, means "The Garden of Love and Compassion".

This is a short retrospective and preview, rather than the promised return documentary itself. It brings the filmmakers back into the conversation ten years later, asking what has changed and whether love and compassion can transform lives. The invitation is simple: "I said, come and see for yourself."

The upload has drawn roughly 2,200 views, a modest arrival on a channel whose archive stretches back decades. Journeyman Pictures added about 292,000 views across the week, while its subscriber total stayed unchanged. Daily viewing is close to its usual level.

The new retrospective is also the busiest of its currently active uploads. Elsewhere in that selection, "Kikuyu Land | Official Theatrical Trailer" follows Nairobi journalist Bea Wangondu into an investigation connecting Kenya's tea industry, colonial history and her own family's secrets.
