Johnstone has a fairly elaborate way of waiting for a differently colored Pokémon: four handheld setups, a multiviewer and a single GameCube WaveBird controller. His Emerald badge quest turns shiny hunting into a small hardware operation before the adventure properly gets going.

There were no new uploads this week, but "I Caught a Shiny Before Each Badge (Pokemon Emerald)" remains the channel's busiest video. Released just before this week began, it pairs a celebration of his two decades playing Pokémon with some wonderfully inconvenient logistics. Emerald's random-number generation sends him to Ruby and Sapphire for the starter hunt. Then the trade cables haven't arrived, leaving him hunting while he waits for the mail.

Getting a shiny into Emerald doesn't settle everything, either. Mudkip, nicknamed Mort, has the boosted experience gains of a traded Pokémon and a tendency to ignore orders. Roxanne and Brawly become tests of persuasion as well as battling.

The older adventures have work to do, too. His Legends Z-A shiny quest is approaching two million views, while the Platinum living-Pokédex project remains among his most active uploads. That challenge requires the catches to come from the DS games, a collecting restriction rather than another hunt for rare colors.

The channel added subscribers over the week, and daily viewing is moderately above its usual level. Nearby in size, iSorrowproductions has had a busier viewing week, while Squirrel has been quieter. For Johnstone, the upload-free stretch has left room for Emerald's cables, encounters and disobedient teammates.
