Johnstone makes every Pokémon Emerald badge wait for a shiny
His return to an older Pokémon adventure arrives alongside a sharp channel-wide jump to more than half a million daily views.
Why this story? The whole channel is running at 517,440 views a day, 14 times a normal day (37,734).
I Caught a Shiny Before Each Badge (Pokemon Emerald)
Johnstone is marking two decades of playing Pokémon by putting a condition on his progress through Emerald: catch a shiny before earning each badge. Getting to the next Gym is no longer just a matter of having a strong enough team.
Shiny Pokémon are rare, differently colored versions of the usual creatures. Hunting them turns an otherwise familiar adventure into a waiting game, with each successful catch becoming its own milestone before the badge battle.
Posted on October 26, "I Caught a Shiny Before Each Badge (Pokemon Emerald)" has reached roughly 470,000 views. It arrives as Johnstone's daily channel views climb to almost fourteen times their usual level. That is a channel-wide rise, rather than a view count for the Emerald upload alone.
The premise has roots in his most-watched video, "I Caught Every Shiny Pokemon Before Each Gym." But the wording matters: this Emerald challenge asks for a shiny before each badge, not every available shiny. It also follows his sprawling Legends Z-A hunt, where ranking up came with another collecting requirement.
In the Emerald video's description, Johnstone says he had long wanted to attempt a challenge in the older generations. The chapter list follows that plan through the badges, then continues into the Elite Four, the Champion and a final hunt. The badge collection is not quite the finish line.
