INAFISH's 'i am Jane doe' and the question its comments keep asking
A short tagged sad and girl power, on a channel of dance and school jokes, drew about five times the usual comments in half a day, most of them about a case at Cornell.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 2,121,829 views a day, 26 times a normal first day on this channel (82,384).

A different kind of short. Most of what INAFISH posts carries tags like funny, dance and relatable: hair colors in a hoodie, nicknames, night routines, the kinds of people everyone knows from school. "i am Jane doe." went up on October 5 with other tags (sad, affirmations, school, girl power), and within twelve hours it had been watched close to 1.5 million times. A new short here usually ends its whole first day nearer 80,000.
The title gives only four words. Jane Doe is the name used for a woman whose identity is kept private, and the comments fill in the rest. Many of the most liked ones say the short is about a sexual assault case at Cornell University. One explanation, written for viewers who arrived without knowing, has been posted again and again by different people, almost word for word. The point they return to most is the number of people who are said to have known and did not step in. Others simply repeat the title as a statement of their own.
The comment section has been unusually busy: in half a day it gathered about five times the comments a short here normally collects in a full first day.
The same day also brought the channel's lighter material. A dance challenge titled "let’s see who can win" made a very fast start, a night-routine short asking "which is your favorite?" drew several times the usual, and two shorts from the day before, one asking viewers for their nicknames, each passed a million views.

The numbers
The figures show a short that ran far beyond the channel's usual first day, with a comment section moving even faster than the views.
