Stalingrad's sniper duel keeps Nick Hodges' Enemy at the Gates in the crosshairs
The two-week-old review of the 2001 Jude Law and Ed Harris war film has passed two million views, with no new episode beside it.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
History Buffs: Enemy at the Gates
No new episode, no slowdown. History Buffs posted nothing this week, and the channel still ran well above its usual daily pace, carried almost entirely by its newest review.
That review is Enemy at the Gates, Jean-Jacques Annaud's 2001 film about the Battle of Stalingrad, with Jude Law as the Soviet sniper Vasily Zaitsev and Ed Harris as the German marksman hunting him. Nick Hodges does what the channel's about text promises: he sets the film beside the record, from the street fighting and Order 227 to the famous duel itself, the part of the story historians have long doubted. At thirteen days old it has passed two million views and is drawing roughly three times the daily audience of anything else in the archive.
Behind it sit two older episodes that have never really gone away. The review of HBO's Chernobyl, Craig Mazin's miniseries with Jared Harris as Valery Legasov, is closing on six million views nearly two years after it went up, and Downfall, the 2004 German film about Hitler's last days in the Berlin bunker, keeps a steady pace of its own. Second World War Europe, it seems, is reliable company for this channel.
The subscriber count held still at about 1.8 million. Among similar movie channels, House M.D. and Heavy Spoilers are both having busy stretches, each roughly double or more their normal daily views, so Hodges is in lively company even while he works on the next episode.
