Godzilla breaks through a Times Square billboard for Minus Zero
TOHO's corner-screen spectacle has passed 100,000 views in ten hours, with viewers admiring the illusion and joking about Manhattan real estate.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 164,304 views a day, 18 times a normal first day on this channel (9,282).
The King of the Monsters has taken Times Square! #GodzillaMinusZero
A shadow moves behind a cloudy white surface. Then Godzilla bursts through, blue dorsal fins glowing, apparently breaking out of a giant corner screen above Times Square.
The Short on GODZILLA OFFICIAL by TOHO shows a digital billboard advertisement for Godzilla Minus Zero, not destruction spilling into the street. Its trick is to use the screen's corner to give the monster depth, before a roar and an atomic-breath blast fill the display.
That miniature city-stomping spectacle has already passed 100,000 views in ten hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for Shorts. The comments are also several times busier than a normal full opening day.
Viewers are picking out the angled screen's illusion, with one imagining Godzilla taking a bite out of the Big Apple. Another finds a distinctly New York upside to monster destruction: perhaps Manhattan property would finally become affordable.
The billboard credits Takashi Yamazaki with the visual effects, writing and direction of Minus Zero, and announces a November 6 theatrical release. Here, the movie's promotional canvas is a piece of the city itself.
