Father who stopped Bend, OR school shooting speaks out | FOX 13 Seattle
Kaylub Giamanco called his mother after shooting and killing the gunman at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. In interview footage from Oregon Public Broadcasting, he describes hearing children pleading for their lives, then gunfire, before crawling forward inside the school.
FOX 13 Seattle's report brings that account together with the police response and the school district's efforts to support its community. Giamanco says he saw a teacher struggling with the gunman and found an opportunity to intervene.
The station reports that three children and a teacher were killed in the shooting. Another teacher and a child were injured before Giamanco stopped the attacker.
The segment reached about 315,000 views in its first day, more than eighty times the station's usual first-day audience for videos of this length. Its focus is Giamanco's description of what happened, rather than a reconstruction of the attack.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz praises the courage of his intervention. But the report also turns to what follows: Superintendent Steven Cook says the district cannot simply return to business as usual. The school remains closed, support resources are being provided, and police are investigating how the gunman obtained weapons and ammunition.
