- 0:29Char diced onions under the broiler until thoroughly blackened.
- 0:53Sear the beef on all sides, then deglaze the skillet with water.
- 2:06Combine the onions, black garlic, seasonings, vinegar, soy sauce, dark beer and pan juices in the slow cooker.
- 3:09Coat the roast in the liquid and cook on low for eight hours.
- 4:17Strain out the onions, then return the beef and sauce for another 30 to 60 minutes.
- 5:55Serve the shredded beef over mashed potatoes with glazed carrots, chives and extra sauce.
The onions look beyond saving. Chef John chars them under the broiler for his pot roast, then reassures anyone hovering over the stop button: "Which I know looks like a mistake, but it's not."
"Slow-Cooker Black Magic Pot Roast Will Put a Spell on You | Food Wishes" was the bigger draw of Food Wishes' two new uploads, reaching about 182,000 views. Its dark theme runs right through the cooker: blackened onions, mashed black garlic, black pepper, balsamic vinegar, soy sauce and porter, plus the juices loosened from the beef-searing pan.
There is patience behind the name, too. After a long cook on low, John strains out the onions and gives the beef another spell in the sauce before shredding it with forks. The finished plate gets mashed potatoes, glazed carrots and an extra spoonful of cooking juices. Viewers have been supplying Vincent Price and Edgar Allan Poe rhymes, debating whether to leave the beef in chunks, and requesting more slow-cooker recipes.
The other upload, "The Truth About Leftover Bacon 🥓", combines a practical burger tip with a familiar kitchen joke: cook the bacon before adding it, assuming such a thing as leftover bacon exists. It is currently collecting slightly more daily views than the roast. October's "Crime Scene Chicken | Deep Cuts for Max Flavor | Food Wishes", with its Korean barbecue-inspired seasoning and deliberately theatrical sauce splatters, also remains active.
Food Wishes added just over a million views across the week, while its subscriber count held steady. Daily viewing is close to its usual level, if a little softer. Nearby in subscriber size, Mythical Kitchen had a much busier viewing week; John's menu was more compact, with one substantial slow-cooker dinner and a bacon joke on the side.
