CBS projects Democratic House control as Senate results lean blue
Anthony Salvanto and Caitlin Huey-Burns examine the congressional results in an election-night update drawing an unusually large audience for Face the Nation.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 484,490 views a day, 33 times a normal first day on this channel (14,708).
Breaking News: Democrats projected to win House as Senate races tilt blue
A House projection is not a call on the whole of Congress. CBS News' election-night update, posted by Face the Nation, projects Democrats will win the House while describing Senate races as tilting blue, a distinction that leaves the two chambers at different stages of the results.
Anthony Salvanto, CBS News' executive director of elections and surveys, joins congressional correspondent Caitlin Huey-Burns to examine key contests as returns arrive. The stakes extend beyond which party holds the gavels: legislation generally needs approval from both chambers before reaching the president for a signature or veto.
The update drew about 190,000 views in its first six hours, far beyond the channel's usual opening-day audience for longer videos. It follows another unusually strong start for Face the Nation's Election Day reporting from Michigan, Texas and Georgia, featuring Aaron Navarro, Adriana Diaz and Skyler Henry.
The channel also posted Robert Costa's election-night conversation with Donald Trump. Its title gives the president's response to the prospect of Democratic control of Congress: he would be "Mr. Veto." That puts a practical question alongside the election calls: what could a Democratic Congress pass that the president would sign?
