- 14:40McIlroy reflects on his comeback and explains why he accepted the opening-round penalty.
"I'd much rather be two shots worse off than be called a cheat," Rory McIlroy says in his post-round interview at Abu Dhabi.
By then, the highlights have shown his golfing response: a round of 63, including five consecutive birdies. After accepting a penalty in the opening round, McIlroy has given himself a very different sort of day to discuss at Yas Links.
DP World Tour's "Round 2 Highlights | 2026 Abu Dhabi Aldar Championship" drew roughly 383,000 views in its first fourteen hours, far beyond the channel's usual first-day audience for regular videos. The comments were already more than ten times as busy as on a typical first day.
There is plenty beyond McIlroy's putting to explain the appeal. Matthew Jordan chips in for eagle, Tyrrell Hatton strings together birdies before a topped fairway-bunker shot interrupts his progress, and Jon Rahm finishes alongside Hatton and Francesco Laporta in a share of the lead.
Viewers are talking about the low scoring and the names gathered near the top. One picks out the gap between McIlroy's own assessment of a shot and what an ordinary golfer would happily accept; another suggests tougher tee and pin positions.
The interview begins after the quarter-hour mark approaches, bringing the focus back to McIlroy's recovery. "I'm still in a much better position than I thought I would be," he says.
