Dolan Darkest asks who Spotify's paid AI remixes are for
His bathroom-recorded commentary questions the reported subscription add-on, especially who gets paid when listeners make a remix.
Why this story? One of the most watched videos since yesterday, with 585,670 views.
What Were They Thinking
Spotify listeners would pay to make the remixes, but the original artists would collect the royalties. That arrangement leaves Dolan Darkest with a question: "I genuinely have to ask, who is this even for?"
His new Short, "What Were They Thinking", has drawn about 586,000 views in its first hours. Over Fall Guys gameplay, he examines a report that Spotify plans to offer AI-powered song remixing for an extra monthly fee, with possibilities such as turning folk tracks into dance music.
Dolan puts the reported cost at $5 and explains that musicians would have an opt-out mechanism to veto remixes. His objection is to the prospect of multiplying songs into endless AI variations, particularly when, as he points out, Spotify has also publicised removing AI and spam tracks from recommendations.
There is a less technical talking point, too: the echo. Dolan announces that he is recording in a bathroom, and viewers promptly suggest more ambitious acoustic experiments, including recording across a windy car park. Others focus on the opt-out arrangement and whether an artist's discarded drafts already offer quite enough alternative versions.
