Seven Montreal police SPVM male and female officers fired after allegations of racism and assault

Seven Montreal police officers have been fired following misconduct investigations involving allegations of racism and abuse of homeless people, CTV News reports.

Anchor Mutsumi Takahashi introduces the dismissals as the action taken after police chief Fady Dagher promised to investigate. The officers worked at stations 39 and 21, according to the report.

Reporter Matt Gilmour outlines allegations dating to June concerning racial misconduct against Black people in Montreal North, including cutting off dreadlocks. He also describes allegations of abuse of homeless people downtown, including an accusation that an on-duty officer urinated on a homeless person.

According to Gilmour, the department revoked the seven officers' code-of-conduct certificates because of ongoing criminal investigations, providing grounds for dismissal. The report describes allegations under investigation, not criminal convictions.

Dagher called the firings an extraordinary step intended to renew public confidence in the force, Gilmour reports.
