Seven hours after C-SPAN posted it on Tuesday, "Booker: "This is gaslighting the American people"" had passed 55,000 views. That is already several times what a new upload on the channel usually collects across its entire first day, and it was still climbing briskly.

The title does most of the explaining: one sharp line, in quotation marks, from Cory Booker, the Democratic senator from New Jersey and former mayor of Newark. It does not say where he said it or whom he was answering. The viewers have plenty to say, though, with several thousand likes and hundreds of comments arriving in those first hours.

It lands in the middle of a lively run for the channel. President Trump's Canada trade remarks opened at sixty times a usual C-SPAN first day, and his Iowa steel-plant announcement and the Starship flight took off right behind them. Booker's start is gentler than the Canada clip's, but after a president and a rocket, this time it is a senator speaking for himself.
