The presence of senior Turkish, Saudi and Pakistani security officials in Tehran is central to Abdulkadir Selvi's argument: the grouping described as the Mecca alliance is seeking a role between Iran and its adversaries, rather than organizing against Iran.
On Turkey's CNN TÜRK, host Ahmet Hakan and guests examine that argument in a Tarafsız Bölge discussion titled "Mekke İttifakı İran'a Niye Gitti? | CANLI HABER", meaning "Live: Why did the Mecca alliance go to Iran?" The meeting comes amid US-Iran tensions and approaching elections in Israel and the United States.
Selvi, a Hürriyet columnist, describes preventing another regional war as the delegation's purpose. He and Hakan emphasize the seniority of those involved: Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin, Saudi Defense Minister Khalid bin Salman and Pakistani military chief Asim Munir. Their counterparts include Iranian security official Mohsen Rezaei and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Footage later shows President Masoud Pezeshkian receiving the visitors.
The concrete commitment presented from the joint statement is that the four countries will continue discussions. Commentator Coşkun Başbuğ interprets the visit as filling a mediation gap between Washington and Tehran. Hakan also reads an Iranian statement describing a new, positive atmosphere and calling for the four countries to act together. These are diplomatic positions, not an announced settlement.
The program then considers reactions beyond the meeting room. Washington correspondent Yunus Paksoy predicts little public response from Donald Trump. Reporting from Tel Aviv, Emrah Çakmak says Israeli press coverage has portrayed the grouping as a potential threat and a Sunni axis. Columnist Zafer Şahin argues that pressures on both Iran and Saudi Arabia have made diplomacy necessary.
Other suggestions remain speculative. Hakan Bayrakçı wonders whether ending Iranian support for Yemen's Houthis was raised; the discussion does not establish that it was agreed.
Late in the broadcast, attention shifts to an explosion near Idlib in Syria. Paksoy relays Syrian state agency SANA's account that wartime remnants detonated and caused material damage only. The panel also discusses sabotage theories, without establishing a cause beyond that official account.
