An investigation involving Turkish lawmaker Mustafa Sarıgül has moved beyond a leaked intimate video to allegations of sexual abuse involving minors at municipal youth camps, journalist Musa Kesler reports in a televised discussion.
The segment from Turkey's CNN TÜRK program Tarafsız Bölge features host Ahmet Hakan and Kesler, the special reports editor at Hürriyet newspaper. Sarıgül is a member of Turkey's parliament representing Erzincan.
Kesler begins with the earlier circulation of a video purportedly showing Sarıgül. He recounts that Sarıgül denied its authenticity, citing a forensic firm's report that described it as manipulated. Kesler then reports subsequent detentions and statements to investigators that brought new allegations into the case.
Among them, Kesler says, are allegations of payments and a contract intended to secure silence. He goes on to describe testimony concerning municipal youth and leadership camps, where minors were allegedly introduced to Sarıgül. According to his account, prosecutors are examining those statements, and ten people have been detained in connection with the inquiry. Detention does not establish guilt.
Hakan draws a distinction between consenting adults' private lives and accusations involving coercion, public authority or children. The discussion's central shift comes midway through: both speakers describe an inquiry they say now concerns allegations of systematic sexual abuse of minors, rather than only a dispute over a recording or possible blackmail.
The broadcast also displays Sarıgül's position that he was set up. The allegations discussed remain allegations, not findings of guilt.
Near the end, Hakan argues that Sarıgül should request the lifting of his parliamentary immunity and answer the accusations through the courts. He says suspending party membership does not address the separate legal protection attached to a seat in parliament.
