Donald Trump does not see Republicans' midterm losses as a verdict on his presidency. In a phone interview with Fox News featured in CNN's report, he points instead to a familiar disadvantage for the party holding the White House: the president himself is not on the ballot.
"No matter how good the president is, you lose. I don't know why, nobody's explained that," Trump says.
CNN's video, posted today, drew about 1.5 million views in its first four hours. It moves beyond the congressional projections we reported here to the president's response and a discussion of what Republicans should do after losing control of both chambers.
Correspondent Julia Benbrook recounts Trump's criticism of Fox News and Republican candidates. The report also plays his explanation for endorsing Ken Paxton rather than John Cornyn in Texas: Trump describes Cornyn as disloyal. Paxton subsequently lost the Senate contest.
Kate Bolduan's panel begins with another Texas result, Greg Abbott's defeat, and Trump's social media criticism of the governor. Republican strategist and pollster Kristen Soltis Anderson offers a different explanation: Republicans faced a deeply unfavorable political environment, and the party needs to reconsider its attachment to MAGA rather than blame individual candidates.
Bolduan and Sabrina Singh examine the Iran war and rising inflation as factors in the result. Conservative radio host Jason Rantz takes a more forward-looking position: Trump could use the new balance of power to negotiate across party lines. His argument gives the discussion a practical question beyond assigning responsibility: whether the president will work with the Democrats who will control Congress.
