John Berman's Senate map offers Democrats a route to control. Harry Enten's follow-up asks how much that route depends on the polls getting it right.
CNN's new election-eve report has drawn about 221,000 views in its first two and a half hours. It pairs an encouraging polling picture for Democrats with a practical examination of uncertainty, rather than treating the map as an election result.
Berman explains that Democratic leads outside the margin of sampling error in four Republican-held states would be enough to change Senate control, provided Democrats also retain every seat they currently hold. Those are conditions, not a forecast of what voters will deliver on Tuesday.
Enten then tests the picture against past polling errors. He shows how Republicans have outperformed final Senate polling averages in states previously carried by Donald Trump. But he also supplies the counterexample: Democrats exceeded final Senate polling averages across the competitive contests in his comparison from the 2022 midterms. Past errors do not all point in the same direction.
Michigan adds another complication. Berman notes that Abdul El-Sayed's polling lead predates Democrat Haley Stevens' endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers. In the panel discussion, Democratic commentator Karen Finney discusses the fallout, while Republican strategist Neil Chatterjee argues the move could mobilize Republicans. The poll cannot yet settle that argument: it describes the contest before the endorsement.
