Monica Lockett has made her decision. After taking a year to find a job, she tells CNN she will vote for Democrat James Talarico, with candidates' approaches to technology and AI helping shape her choice.
Her answer is part of Ed Lavandera's follow-up with voters who questioned Talarico at a CNN town hall. Their decisions, and lingering doubts, give substance to the warning that opens the report: Ted Cruz says Republicans could lose statewide races across Texas.
The Senate contest pits Talarico against Republican Ken Paxton. But the voters Lavandera revisits are not all arriving at the same conclusion. Jasmyn Carter says Talarico's economic platform helped win her support. Asked what mattered, she says: "It was how he listened."
Jodi Hunt, despite her conservative views, remains hesitant about voting Republican. "Who can I trust to actually do right by Texans?" she asks. Tyler James describes feeling politically homeless and frustrated with negative campaign advertising.
The report then moves to Corpus Christi, where John King examines a redrawn district that CNN says should be safe for Republicans but is proving less certain. Conversations in Nueces County bring spending, political character and social issues into the picture.
The economic concerns become particularly tangible in King's interviews: Pastor Steve Martinez describes struggles in his community and lines at the church food bank. Ice cream shop owner Daisy Alcazar explains how community fears have hurt her business. "And we don't have customers," she says.
