Miller and Steele question Fox's turnout explanation for Republican losses
The Bulwark's election-night reaction clip contrasts polling and turnout explanations with the hosts' argument that voters rejected Republican policies.
Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 262,426 views a day, 16 times a normal first day on this channel (16,877).
Watching Fox News cope in real time
Peter Doocy reports that White House officials are "not nervous yet because they haven't seen enough about Texas." Tim Miller and Michael Steele keep watching as Fox News's election-night coverage turns to the possibility of Greg Abbott losing and questions about Republican campaign messaging.
The Bulwark's Short, "Watching Fox News cope in real time", puts the broadcast alongside the hosts' reactions. It drew roughly 262,000 views in its first day, compared with around 17,000 for a usual Short on the channel.
The disagreement is about what went wrong for Republicans. The Fox excerpts examine turnout efforts, polling and campaign messages. Miller's answer is that the policies themselves were unpopular, rather than simply poorly explained. He breaks into laughter during the discussion of Speaker Mike Johnson's polling statements, then challenges the suggestion that opposition to the Iran war can be answered by warning about defunding troops.
Steele, a former Republican National Committee chair, supplies a brief agreement at the end: "Not complicated." Their argument is the point of the clip, not an independent demonstration of why individual voters made their choices.
That makes this a different slice of The Bulwark's post-election coverage from Sarah Matthews's response to Jesse Watters: Miller and Steele are watching explanations develop across several broadcast excerpts, with Texas providing a recurring test of Fox's expectations.
