Five killed and dozen more injured in Krakow shooting, police say | BBC News
The gunman survived. BBC News reports that police shot and detained the man who drove into Kraków's Main Market Square and began firing at people.
The broadcaster's initial bulletin captures the first account of the attack: police reporting five people killed, a map locating the square, and a statement from Prime Minister Donald Tusk saying he was being kept informed by the interior minister. The anchor describes eyewitness accounts of a black car entering the square before shots were fired at pedestrians.
That early report has drawn around 420,000 views in 12 hours, far beyond the usual audience for a BBC News Short.
The account has since developed. In subsequent coverage, the BBC reported six people killed and more than a dozen injured, including police officers. It said armed officers pursued the attacker's car until it crashed, then exchanged fire with him.
The later report also describes the city centre being locked down and buildings evacuated while the vehicle was searched for explosive devices. Tusk's statement shown in the initial bulletin says police are investigating the circumstances of the attack.
