Buba Galadima says election fever has not caught Nigeria, 100 days out

His Arise News interview, billed under the name of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, ran far ahead of the channel's other election segments from the same day.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 72,728 views a day, 32 times a normal first day on this channel (2,268).

Buba Galadima's interview stood out. With about 100 days left before Nigeria's general election, the veteran politician told Arise News that the country has yet to catch election fever, and the clip drew more than 30,000 views in its first seven hours. A new Arise segment usually gathers a couple of thousand views across a whole first day.

The channel's description sums up his point: every politician outside the ruling APC is watching their back, and he doubts any candidate beyond that party is sure of making it onto the ballot. Arise labels him a stalwart of the Nigeria Democratic Congress. Galadima is a familiar voice on Nigerian television. For years he was one of Muhammadu Buhari's closest political allies, and their later break became one of the better-known ruptures in Nigerian politics.

The election filled the channel's day. Arise also posted INEC saying it has moved from planning to execution, the Inter-Party Advisory Council chairman asking for election funds to be released on time, and an analyst urging opposition parties to work together. None of those drew more than a few thousand viewers. Much of Galadima's comment section is about the interview itself: several viewers ask the host to let him finish, and others want the station to dig into their complaints about pressure on the opposition.

The day's other strong start was a sober one, a report on the Nigerian Air Force's continuing search after an aircraft crash.
