Life Savers become aspirin in Reactions' candy chemistry experiment
The American Chemical Society channel's archive supplies the viewing during a week without new uploads.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
making aspirin from lifesavers
The candy changes careers. In Reactions' "making aspirin from lifesavers," oil of wintergreen extracted from mint candies becomes the starting material for a chemistry demonstration, not something to take for a headache.
The presenter works through salicylic acid to acetylsalicylic acid, better known as aspirin, then compares his crystals with commercial aspirin and pure salicylic acid in a color test. There is a qualification behind the reveal: full confirmation would require laboratory equipment he doesn't have. His final instruction is considerably simpler than the synthesis: don't eat the science.
Posted in August, the experiment has reached about 2.1 million views and is the channel's busiest video right now. Its description supplies a lovely bit of laboratory frustration: the presenter had spent months trying to make aspirin from willow bark and found the candy route much easier.
Reactions posted nothing new this week. More recent experiments, "biodiesel from bacon fat redemption" and "they have so many ways to destroy concrete," are also drawing views, though on a much smaller daily scale than the Life Savers demonstration.
The channel added subscribers, but its weekly growth was gentler than its month-long pace, and daily viewing is currently roughly half its usual level. Among nearby science channels, Applied Science had a similar weekly views gain, while Konstantin - trendsetter had a much larger week. For Reactions, the most active experiment is the one that turns a familiar candy ingredient into an unfamiliar set of crystals.
