Inside the Republican event as Ken Paxton loses the Texas senate seat | ABC NEWS Loop
One supporter is still describing Ken Paxton as a future great senator. Then the results come in, the projection screen is switched off, and Paxton takes the podium to congratulate James Talarico.
Lia Walsh's report from Dallas captures that change inside the Republican election-night gathering. Posted on ABC News In-depth, the Short drew nearly 300,000 views before its first full day was over, far beyond the channel's usual start for the format.
The result breaks a long Republican hold on Texas Senate elections. As Walsh explains outside Paxton's campaign bus, the party had not lost one since the 1980s. Talarico, a Democratic state representative, campaigned on tackling corruption and the cost of living.
"Well, let me start off by congratulating James Talarico," Paxton says at the podium. He acknowledges a difficult night for Republicans across the country.
That wider reckoning also features in Sarah Ferguson's separate 7.30 interview with former congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene, who says Trump has "killed" the MAGA movement. Both the longer interview and its Short have drawn unusually strong starts on the channel.
Back in Dallas, Walsh finds more than disappointment. Some attendees see a national political shift; another questions whether Paxton's campaign spoke to voters' priorities, arguing that ads about taking on Google missed what people cared about.
