Video taking off 455x its usual first day

A volcano in Los Angeles: 9-1-1's season ten trailer takes off on ABC

Ten hours after it went up, the trailer for the October 15 premiere had passed 400,000 views, as ABC's fall return shifts from Abbott Elementary and Shark Tank to the 118.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 732,141 views a day, 455 times a normal first day on this channel (1,608).

"9-1-1 | Season 10 Official Trailer" went up on ABC's channel with a one-line pitch and a pun: LA-LA Land, the description says, has no protocol for LA-VA Land. Ten hours later it had more than 400,000 views. That is several hundred times what a new ABC video usually gathers in a whole first day. The network's run of fall trailers keeps landing, and this one sits right beside the Abbott Elementary trailer that opened the week.

The disaster is the talking point. Viewers list what the show has already thrown at Los Angeles, an earthquake and a tsunami among them, and add a volcano to the list. Several pick out one line from the trailer, a firefighter admitting that a volcano cannot be stopped, and read it as the writers answering the jokes about last season's space storyline. Others point to the 1997 film Volcano, in which Tommy Lee Jones faced lava running through the same city. One question keeps coming up: how does a volcano suddenly appear in LA at all?

Some viewers are still writing about Bobby Nash, the captain Peter Krause played until the show killed him off in season eight, and others notice new hair and a firefighter's mustache.

The rest of ABC's day looked very different. Small clips for Shark Tank, R.J. Decker and Celebrity Wheel of Fortune each drew hundreds of views, or at most a couple of thousand. The premiere is set for October 15, with streaming on Hulu.
