Will Atherton's family-dog shortlist makes room for a Mastiff
His own German Shepherd and memories of Eileen help explain the choices in the week's most-watched upload.
Why this story? The channel's weekly summary: what went up this week, what is drawing views now, and where the channel stands among similar channels.
TOP 3 BREEDS FOR A FAMILY
Will Atherton puts trainability aside for a moment when he reaches the English Mastiff. Remembering his own dog, Eileen, he makes the case for a sweet family companion even if learning commands isn't the breed's strongest suit.
That personal detail gives "TOP 3 BREEDS FOR A FAMILY" more substance than a simple countdown. German Shepherds take his third spot, with Atherton explaining that he chose a pet line rather than a working line for his own dog because he wanted one that could switch off easily. Mastiffs come next, followed by his first choice, Labrador Retrievers, with Golden Retrievers sharing the recommendation. For families with less training experience or time, he favours the retrievers' combination of intelligence, trainability and less innate wariness than guarding breeds.
The upload has reached roughly 242,000 views and is comfortably the strongest draw among his five new videos. Viewers are adding their own histories: memories of gentle Staffies, much-missed Labradors and goofy Goldens. The German Shepherd choice also prompts discussion about working lines, exercise demands and whether they suit an average household.
Breed histories supplied much of the rest of the week's menu, covering the Irish Setter, Duck Tolling Retriever and French Bulldog, alongside "YOUR INTENT IS IRRELEVANT". The Irish Setter and Duck Tolling Retriever histories are also among the channel's most active uploads, though the family shortlist accounts for far more daily viewing.
Across the channel, daily views are close to their usual level and subscribers were unchanged over the week. Nearby in the pets-and-animals group, Sierra Rose and WeRateDogs added substantial audiences; Atherton's week was steadier, with the practical question of choosing a family dog doing most of the new-upload work.

All good picks but can't live without my lab

@Asti.sayAhsteeSee it on YouTube100% agree with the GSD, a well trained and well exercised German Shepherd is the ultimate life companion and a tremendous family dog.
I've had 2 and the only reason I didn't get a 3rd is because I thought they'd be too much pressure on a new dog to live upto the memory of my last boy.@paulsheehan2998See it on YouTubeI believe it is the owners that bring out the loyalty, I have owned 12 different breeds from all different breeds, both genders. Not a bad dog in the lot, some more independent thinkers. But each had its own personality and were the best. It takes effort, kindness and understanding of the situation.
@Karen-p9t5gSee it on YouTubeAs a fellow Behaviourist and Trainer and all due respect to your personal opinions; German Shepherds wouldn't be in my top 10 for an average family. But they might have better bred lines in the UK compared to here in Aus.
