Viva La Dirt League's "children's show" has a script problem

A staged recording-session sketch puts an increasingly doubtful voice actor opposite a writer who insists every double meaning is innocent.

Why this story? The video opened at a pace of 760,422 views a day, 14 times a normal first day on this channel (55,603).

""""Childrens"""" show""""Childrens"""" show

"I just thought this was supposed to be a children's film," Berry says, interrupting his recording session. The people on the other side of the glass see no problem. That is very much the problem.

Viva La Dirt League's sketch casts Berry as a voice actor trying to establish exactly what he has agreed to record. His script concerns Wild Willie, Veronica and the transfer of information, phrased in ways that make the supposedly innocent project sound decidedly adult.

The Short drew about 630,000 views in 16 hours, already far beyond the channel's usual full-day audience for the format. It swaps the group's familiar game-world absurdities for a workplace where asking an entirely reasonable question makes you the difficult employee.

As Berry reads further, the writer becomes offended by his interpretation, then tearfully defends the dialogue. "They're metaphors mate, they're metaphors!" he insists. Having spent years developing these characters, he treats the actor's objection as a failure to appreciate his work.

Viewers are discussing the adult jokes they missed in childhood entertainment, while others single out the writer's mustache and shirt as part of the character. The sketch keeps its attention on the recording booth: Berry wants clarity, the writer wants artistic vindication, and the engineer eventually has a much more practical question about getting paid.

  • This is why when I get a chance to look over a work in progress, I point those things out. Sometimes they're intentional because it's for an older audience; othertimes it's "Ohhhh crap. Yeah. Yep, I see that now."

The numbers

The recording-booth sketch passed the channel's usual first-day Shorts audience well before its first day was over. Its comment section was also substantially busier than usual.
